Report from the Chair of the Human Diversity Committee

Goals

  • Act as a resource to help with issues of diversity among NAGPS members.
  • Collect information from member school representatives as to what diversity initiatives are occurring on campuses and also report any issues that member schools may be experiencing.

Recurring

  • Trained a group of student leaders at Kalamazoo College on issues of race and class June 13-14.
  • Western Michigan University’s American Council on Education Women’s Steering Committee. Main focus on defeating an anti-affirmative action proposal to be placed on the November 7 ballot. Information available at: www.oneunitedmichigan.org
  • Represented office of Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay and Transgender Student Services at the newly formed Kalamazoo Alliance for Equality
    http://www.kalamazooalliance.org/
  • June 7 - Attended follow-up meeting for Crossroads diversity training workshop (May 24).
http://www.crossroadsministry.org/SchedulingWorkshop.sxml. Will attend a two- and one half-day Crossroads diversity training October 11-13.
  • July 11 - Met with Program Officer at ARCUS Foundation regarding grant funding opportunities. http://www.arcusfoundation.org/pages/home.shtml

I also participated in strategic planning as a member of the Great Lakes PeaceJam Task Force. I mention this because NAGPS may want to tackle some strategic planning in the near future.
Additionally, I wrote two papers recently on graduate employee unions; if anyone would care to read either one of these, I would be happy to share the information.

Respectfully submitted July 20, 2006
